TOUR ITINERARY

Your private guide will meet you in Piazza Ognissanti for a two and a half hour walking tour of the gorgeous Lungarni!

The Lungarni were built during the second half of the 19th century when Florence became, only for five years, the capital city of the newly born Italian Reign.

Your guide will unveil in front of your eyes the beauty of this city right from its heart: the Arno River. Here the Romans decide to erect a city; the marble used to build the beautiful edifices designed by Michelangelo and Brunelleschi arrived into the city by water!

Your tour will start from the beautiful Piazza Ognissanti where you can admire the gorgeous 12th century Church of Ognissanti, with its artworks from artists like Domenico Ghirlandaio and Sandro Botticelli. Heading south you will soon reach the Arno River; pass by Ponte della Carraia and you will find yourself walking through the elegant Lungarno Corsini, one of the most sophisticated place in Florence. Once you will reach the St. Trinity Bridge you will cross the river and visit Borgo San Jacopo with its unique houses that overlook the Arno. Your next stop will be Ponte Vecchio the most famous and photographed bridge in Florence! Here you will be able to admire the unique Corridoio Vasariano built in order to connect Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti. Cross the bridge and walk by the Uffizi Gallery and many other beautiful Palaces and Churches until you will reach Ponte delle Grazie. Pass on the left bank, the Oltrarno, your last stop will be the beautiful Terrazza di Villa Bardini from which you will enjoy a breath-taking view of this incredible city!

At the end of your guided tour continue to enjoy on your own this stunning and unique city! We suggest to visit the spectacular Boboli Garden: get lost in this inimitable park like generations of Medici Family members in the past!

TOUR ITINERARY

This full day excursion will take you on a fantastic journey to discover two of the most beautiful medieval towns of Tuscany: Siena and San Gimignano. Your first stop will be Siena which, along with Florence and Pisa, is one of the leading art cities in Tuscany. Throughout the centuries, this city has managed to preserve its handsome medieval character.

Your tour will begin with a visit to the Basilica of San Domenico, a 13th century Gothic church much frequented for its venerated relics of Saint Catherine, patron saint of Italy and Europe. You will continue to the Banca Monte dei Paschi, a magnificent palace-like bank that was founded in 1472; it is considered to be the oldest surviving bank in Europe and is in fact still active. From here, you will walk to the nearby Piazza del Campo, a shell-shaped square that is the undoubted center of Siena’s vibrant city life. As your guide will explain, this is where the famed and exhilarating Palio horse race takes place twice a year. Ten representatives from the seventeen districts of Siena will ride bareback around the Piazza at breakneck speeds for the chance to win the Palio. Following a brief stop at the Palazzo Chigi-Saracini, which houses the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, you will arrive at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, also known as the Duomo di Siena. This marvelous medieval cathedral made of white marble is one of Siena’s most impressive architectural wonders, a mixture of Classical, French Gothic and Tuscan Romanesque styles.

From here, you will have some free time in Siena. You can either keep exploring the city on your own or choose to have lunch in one of the delicious restaurants in the area. Just be sure to return on time to continue your tour to San Gimignano!

The town’s fourteen medieval towers are visible from a great distance, giving the hilltop settlement a remarkable and unforgettable skyline. Like Siena, San Gimignano is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Tuscany, boasting beautiful buildings such as churches and palazzos. The tour will take you to the wonderfully preserved main square called the Piazza della Cisterna, and there you will visit the 13th century the Palazzo del Popolo, San Gimignano’s town hall.

At the end of your visit meet your driver again to return to your accommodation in Florence.

TOUR ITINERARY

You will depart with your private driver for a full day excursion to the beautiful Tuscan cities of Pisa and Lucca.

Pisa is best known its Leaning Tower, considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, however it offers much more in terms of artistic and architectural treasures. The tower shares the Piazza dei Miracoli with the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Duomo of Pisa, as well as St John’s Baptistery. These three beautiful marble buildings are all stunning examples of Pisan Romanesque architecture, and are in fact the originators of this style which later spread through Tuscany. Other beautiful examples of Pisan architecture are the Duomo of San Martino, the Church of San Michael in Foro, and the Basilica of San Frediano in Lucca.

From Pisa, you will continue your tour to Lucca, famous above all for its intact Renaissance Era city walls. These fortifications have long since lost their purpose and are now a poetic pedestrian promenade going around the town’s old section. While in Lucca, you will have time to visit all the gorgeous churches, palaces and gardens on your own time. At the end of your visit, meet with your driver to return to your hotel.

Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore

Florence - Duomo - top view
Florence - DuomoFlorence - Duomo - side viewFlorence - Duomo - night view

At the end of the 13th century, the city council decided to replace the old Cathedral Santa Reparata by a new one, the actual cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore. The project was first given to the architect Arnolfo di Cambio the construction had only started when he died in 1302. Then the architect Giotto pursued it along with several other architects after him.

A great problem appeared when it came to build a dome and it was finally the architect Filippo Brunelleschi who solved it and created a beautiful dome. The dome is octagonal and measures 112 meters and it took no less than 140 years to finish the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore.  As the dome is octagonal, Brunelleschi dedicated one team per side, so 8 different teams worked on this dome, they used approximately 4 millions of bricks. Bricks were put in “spina di pesce”, it means as a shape of fish bones, so not straight and it made the dome very strong. Brunelleschi thought his cupola for the dome very carefully. During the construction, no outside scaffoldings were used to build the dome but internal structures were built month after month while it was growing up. The construction was finished in 1436 but the lantern on the top of the cupola was only set in 1461.

Things to see

Giorgio Vasari was chosen to decorate the dome inside. He decide to paint the Last Judgement, however he died three years after he started the project. After his death, the work was given to Federigo Zuccaro. The Last Judgment was finished in 1579.

The dome can be climbed and visitors can appreciate a wonderful view over the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore and Florence roofs.

The façade which can be admired today is more recent and was realized during the 19th century.

More than a church, the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore became a sign of the rich and prosperous city of Florence. Since the Renaissance, the dome and the cathedral were the symbol of the city of Florence.
