One of Antonio Canova most well known masterpieces. Paolina Borghese, sculpted between 1805 – 08, is now kept in The Borghese Gallery. The portrait of the aristocratic Roman reclining in an attitude reminiscent of Venus is one of the sculptor’s most successful work. Like other works in marble, it was expressly commissioned from the Venetian artist by the rich Borghese family.
Gianlorenzo Bernini “David firing his sling”, is one of the many sculptures on show in Borghese Gallery. The Face of David is said to be a self-portrait of Bernini. The artist was the first to use a spiral movement to give the illusion of vitality to a sculpture, a technique he used in many occasion. Bernini artistic qualities were demonstrate in numerous fields: he was later to prove himself a brilliant architect and engineer, as shown by the colonnade st St Peter’s Square and the famous fountains in Piazza Navona and Piazza Barberini in Rome.
The Borghese Gallery also include the most famous work of Gianlorenzo Bernini the sculpture of “Apollo and Daphne”.
